Flat Work, Brick Work, and Stamped Concrete from the Wild Irishman in Denver

Concrete is one of the most versatile and durable building materials available in the entire world. The unique mixture of water, aggregate, and cement binds together creating a long-lasting, reliable, cost-effective building material that has been used for roadways, foundations, sidewalks, buildings, walls, and a number of other different projects. Concrete has the lowest carbon footprint of nearly any construction material.

Flat Work

Flat work concrete surfaces are those which are are constructed in a horizontal plane and even those which may rise in elevation (i.e. ramps). Probably the most noticeable of concrete work types, these include common items like sidewalks, driveways, roads, building foundations, or any other flat surface.

Expansion joints are often used depending on the area and slope of the job site. These small spaces between sections help to strengthen the concrete and prevent against cracking. For driveways especially, this helps the surface to withstand the weight of an automobile and provides the durability to live through a lifetime of traffic.

Brick Work

Concrete blocks are one of the most common building materials used in construction due to their versatility, reliability, and resilience. These blocks typically are hollow core but can also be solid units and are laid together in a brick pattern for wall, both interior, exterior, and especially load bearing, construction.

Reinforcing bars (rebar) are often placed within the openings of the units and the hollow cores can also be filled with concrete. This greatly increases the strength of whatever it is you are constructing.

Stamped Concrete

Concrete stamping is a method utilized to add a little character to your concrete surface. Typically applied to common flatwork areas like sidewalks, patios, or driveways, the stamp is pushed into the concrete prior to drying and used to create the appearance of other more expensive building materials like brick pavers or flagstone.

This method can also add a safety component to areas which may be subject to standing water (i.e. around swimming pools) by creating a surface with a little more grip for added traction. For those high traffic areas which have the potential to be fall hazards when wet, utilizing a stamped concrete can add both beauty and safety to your project.
