Caring for your grass should be your Denver landscaping priority

April 17, 2019

As your lawn begins to grow back from the winter months, it might be looking a little brown and down. No matter how it’s bouncing back, caring for your grass should be one of the your top priorities when it comes to Denver landscaping and care this year. We’ve put together our best tips for taking care of your grass this spring.

Start of Spring: Rake Your Lawn
Before you get started taking care of your lawn, start with a good rake. Even if there are no leaves or sticks in your lawn, giving your lawn a once over with a rake will help to remove dead or dying grass and make room for new patches to grow. Be sure to use moderate strength and do it early in the spring - you don’t want to risk pulling out strong and healthy grass.

Aeration
Aeration is used to loosen the soil and give grass the opportunity to breathe and absorb nutrients. While aeration seems intimidating at first (after all, you are poking holes in your lawn) it is necessary to reset your lawn after a rough Denver winter.

Weeds...The Worst Part
Make sure that you address the weeds in your lawn. If you have any weeds sprouting up early, be sure to remove them by the root or use a weed killer. If you decide to use a weed killer, consider using it sparingly and only on the spot that is affected with weeds. Using weed killer across your entire lawn might kill the grass you are trying to grow!

The Bare Spots
You might notice some bare spots in your lawn, but that’s okay. By addressing this early in the spring you should grass growing in no time. Take time to water the area thoroughly, reseed and cover your newly laid seed with an additional layer of dirt. Just be sure to keep watering this spot throughout the seasons so the grass continues to grow.

Water, Water, Water
Grass needs watered regularly, it’s important that it stays well hydrated throughout the season. Depending on the type of grass you have, and your climate zone will depend on how often you need to water. Give us a call, and we are happy to help guide you in the right direction.

Mowing
When it comes to mowing, it’s important to do so correctly. We recommend keeping grass at least one inch at all times. If you cut your grass too short, the grass will lose moisture and it’s going to be hard to grow a full, thick lawn. Also, leave the grass clippings. Mulching lawn mowers are ideal, because you won’t even notice the clippings that are left in your lawn. Grass clippings are full of nutrients that will help your lawn continue to grow.
