How to prune your Denver landscaping

May 9, 2019

As we move into late spring, it is the right time to take a look at your Denver landscaping and determine what needs to be pruned, and how to do so. Think of pruning like a haircut for your plants - pruning keeps plants growing healthy and well. By starting a pruning schedule, you can ensure that the landscaping you’ve spent so much time taking care of will stay healthy for the summer months to come.

Why?
The first thing you might be wondering is why should you prune at all. Pruning encourages fruit and flower production in the plant, but also improves the health of your plant overall. Through pruning, you can also shape/control the growth of your plant. Pruning can also keep things safe out and around your home. There are a few reasons you shouldn’t prune plants though, including to control the height of your plant. For example, it’s okay to cut off dead branches, but don’t cut off the top of a tree because you aren’t sure about the height.

What Do I Need to Prune?
You can’t prune with just anything, and depending on what your pruning depends on what tools you need. Pruning and lopping shears are used when pruning small shrubs, flowering bushes or really anything with branches less than 2 inches in diameter. However, these aren’t the only tools at your disposal. You can also utilize tools such as pole pruners, hedge shears and pruning saws - but all depend on what you are hoping to trim. General Guidelines
When pruning, you should only prune things that are damaged, diseased, dying, or dead. By getting rid of anything that meets the “four D’s,” you are ensuring you are only cutting off things that won’t harm your plant. If you start pruning parts of your plant that don’t fit in those categories, you are going to cause unnecessary stress to your plants.

When Should You Prune?
We recommend pruning in the late spring, but it does depend on what you are pruning. There are several guides you can find online, but we are always here to help answer your pruning questions and provide you with recommendations.

How to Prune
When it comes to pruning, we have the following tips:
Structure: Don’t prune anything that would affect the overall structure or stability of the plant.
Lines: Take time to follow the overall lines of your plant. By following the natural structure of your plant, you’re guaranteed to have a well-shaped plant!
