Things to know before planting a tree to enhance your Denver landscaping

Trees are lifelong investments, and proper care in the early stages of a tree’s life is essential to ensure strong development. Incorporating trees into your yard will help to provide shade for grass and plants, but also add great curb appeal and tie your yard together. There are certainly a few things you should know before planting your Denver tree.
What Tree to Buy

When to Plant
The first step in planting a tree is determining when is the best time to plant it. We recommend planting your tree in the early spring, or the fall. Both of these seasons will give your tree time to establish its roots and grow prior to enduring a hot Denver summer, or a brutal Denver winter.
Steps to Plant
Your first step in planting a tree is to ensure that you are not digging or planting near any underground utilities. If while digging the hole for your tree you hit a utility line, that can cause another set of issues which you might be liable for. Once you find a digging spot that you are able to dig in, and that fits for your landscaping needs, start to dig a shallow, broad hole.
Your hole should be 2-3 times the size of the root ball of your tree, but only as deep as the root ball. When you place your tree in the hole, you should be able to see the trunk flare. The trunk flare is the point at the base of the tree that begins to flare out. When you purchase a tree, typically the root ball is covered by a container of some sorts, which you will have to remove before planting your tree.
After placing the tree in your newly created hole, you will need to loosely fill it with dirt. You want the hole to be firm to eliminate any air pockets that will cause dry roots - but not so firm and dense that it doesn’t allow the tree to grow. After filling the hole you should take time to determine whether the tree should be staked - if so, stake the tree six or so inches away from the tree trunk. After planting your tree, be sure to provide it with plenty of water throughout the summer to keep it growing and healthy. When watering, make sure that you keep the soil moist, but not oversaturated. We recommend placing some hay or even mulch at the bottom of the tree to help maintain moisture.
