Looking at free Denver trees? Here is what you need to know

June 5, 2019

Incorporating trees into your yard will help to provide shade for grass and plants, but also add great curb appeal and tie your yard together. Denver trees are lifelong investments, and the cost can be a deterrent if you don’t want to break the bank. When landscaping on a budget, promises such as free trees can often seem like a great deal - one that you have to take advantage of. There are a few things you need to be aware of before taking advantage of a free tree deal.

The Structure
Paying attention to the structure of said free tree is going to be very important before you take advantage of such a deal. If the tree you are going to receive already has damaged roots, you could be getting a bad deal - particularly if you are spending money on something else to get the free tree. Always take a look at roots, existing branches, and the trunk of the tree prior to signing a dotted line.

Planting
Are you responsible for planting the free tree? Or is the company who is providing the tree going to plant for you? Proper planting of a tree can be tricky, and while we always recommend contacting a professional, be sure you observe as they are planting the tree. Planting the tree in the wrong area can cause issues, or if they plant the tree without cutting off the protective cage or bag surrounding the roots...you can be in for some trouble! Make sure to keep an eye on your landscapers as they begin planting the tree. In addition, piling mulch around the base of a new tree can cause growth issues and ultimately be bad for the tree’s growth and development.

Disease
Ask questions before signing anything that secures you the free tree. It’s going to be important that you ask to observe the tree as well, as there can be a chance the tree is diseased or bug-ridden. Diseased trees can be near impossible to save without spending additional money, and more so if they are bug-ridden you could be bringing new pests into your yard that could wreak havoc on your existing, or new, landscape.

Free trees sound like a great deal, at first. But if you have any of the aforementioned issues it can cause problems long term that will ultimately cost you more money. Trees are an investment, be sure to take time to spend the appropriate time to vet out any offers from landscaping companies. Yes free is always beneficial - but it doesn’t always guarantee you will have a long-lasting tree in your yard.
