Your Denver landscaping ABCs: Part Three

August 28, 2019

Welcome back to our third part in the Denver landscaping ABCs series. We have nine more plants that we love, plants that you should consider purchasing. Always remember that you can contact us with any questions, or if you need help building your perfect landscape.

Q - Quercus: Quercus, more commonly known as an oak tree. We love the versatility of oak trees, as there are dozens of different species. Beautiful, strong, and ultimately hardy - the oak tree is the perfect addition to your lawn as long as you have the space!

R - Rain Lily: Rain Lilies are beautiful, sun-loving plants that will do well with little space. If you are looking for something a little less-flashy, the rain lily is perfect for your pots and flower beds. Just remember, this plant will need to be watered weekly after planting for the first time, but will be relatively low maintenance after the first 2-3 months.

S - Spirea: Spirea is one of our favorite shrubs, and why wouldn’t they be? With pretty white flowers, the spirea can tolerate full sun and part-sun conditions with moderate watering. The best part of a spirea is that they are tough - making them perfect for someone who may struggle with keeping plants around.

T - Tiger Lily: Known for their beautiful color, Tiger Lilies make the perfect addition to any landscape. Just be cautious of color schemes, as the bright orange color of Tiger Lilies can easily overpower other color schemes in your border.

U - Uvularia: This United States native is a unique one. Not only is it a perennial, but it’s known for leaves and flowers that hang towards the ground. The perfect indoor or outdoor plant, the uvularia will grow to be approximately 18” tall.

V - Verbena: Verbena is some of the gardens’ most beautiful colorful plants, and they are widely popular! These plants are perfect for edging, or to add to the border of your flower bed. Just remember, it does need well drained soil but it is drought tolerant!

X - Xerophyllum Asphodeloides: Believe it or not, there aren’t many plant names that start with “x” unless you get technical! Commonly known as a “turkey beard,” this plant perennial herb that has sharp leaves and beautiful white flowers.

Y - Yellow Snapdragon: We love the look of these beautifully unique plants. Not only do we love the look of Yellow Snapdragons, we love how easy they are to care for. These plants are heat tolerant, and thrive in both part-sun as well as shady conditions.

Z - Zebra Plant: We love the Tiger Plant, but if you are living in the Colorado area you will have to make this an indoor plant. This plant loves filtered sun, and only for part of the day. Keep an eye on the beautifully striped leaves, if they start to burn the plan is getting too much sun.

BONUS - We told you last week you’d get ten plants this week! This bonus plant is probably our favorite on the list. Yellow alyssum create beautiful “baskets of gold,” in your garden. They will quite literally spread beautiful yellow flowers wherever they are planted. Only growing to 6-12 inches tall, this beautiful plant helps to crowd out weeds and provides perfect ground cover.
