Five steps to designing the perfect Denver landscape

September 4, 2019

You might have moved into a new home, or are simply looking to revitalize your Denver home’s current landscaping - either way it can be intimidating! But it truly doesn’t have to be. We have your guide to designing your Denver landscaping, and remember, you can always contact Wild Irishman if you need assistance. So let’s get to it, your five steps to designing the perfect landscape.

1. ) Measure, measure, measure
It’s important to start your project with measuring your available space, both in depth and width. Start by measuring the space you’d like to put landscaping in, but be sure to start 2-4 inches away from the side of your house to give your plants some breathing room.

2.) Research
Your next step will be to research plants that you want to incorporate into your landscaping. We recommend starting online. While local greenhouses might have healthier plants, you’ll get all the information you need in one spot by conducting some initial research online. This includes grow together code, height, width, space needed for planting, as well as hardiness. Pick plants that not only grow together well, but also fit your maintenance needs. For example, if you need a low maintenance plant you might opt for perennials that don’t require much pruning.

3.) Visit your local Denver landscaping business
Once you have some plants picked out, visit your local Denver landscaping business. This will give you an opportunity to see the plants in person, ask questions, and get an idea for how much you are looking to spend. If you haven’t done enough research or have an idea of what you are wanting to purchase, visit us so we can talk to you further about your options.

4.) Sketching it out
We recommend that when it comes to planning your landscaping space, that you invest in some grid graph paper. You can use the grid as an easy way to measure out how much space you have, and how much space each plant needs. When sketching your available space, make sure you incorporate fixed features such as house lines, light poles, or additional structures. We recommend that you sketch everything on your grid paper. This includes any existing plants you have in your landscaping that you’d like to keep, as well as what plants you intend to incorporate.

5.) Let’s get going!
You’ve picked your plants, sketched out your plan...let’s get going! Head back to your local landscaping store to pick up the plants, dirt, mulch (if you’d like) and other plant essentials and get to planting! We recommend picking a mild day to plant, as it is highly recommended that you don’t transfer plants during a heat wave. Once you get your landscaping set, be sure to give all plants a good water!
