Easy Tips for Maintaining Bushes and Shrubs in Your Denver Landscape Design

May 29, 2020

The shrubs around your home are an important component of your Denver landscaping. However, they’re also one of the highest maintenance plants in your yard. When they’re left to grow unchecked, they can quickly spiral out of control and the rest of your landscaping will pay the price. Not only will it look unkept, but that rapid shrub growth can block the sun from reaching your other plants. The best thing you can do is stay on top of trimming throughout the growing season. Here are a few tips to help you keep them looking great.

Avoid Overwatering Them
Shrubs can grow quickly and when they’re overwatered, they grow even faster. This can make even the most properly maintained yard look like an overgrown mess. Pay attention to your watering schedule and start watering your shrubs less frequently if they seem like they’re growing to rapidly. If you use an irrigation system, make sure there aren’t any leaks around the waterlines. These can contribute to overwatering and the soonest you get them repaired, the better off you’ll be.

Trim from the Base Up
Dead growth can put strain on the shrub very quickly, impacting its ability to flower and thrive during the growing season. In most cases, you’ll notice dead growth around the base of the shrub. Check it every month and trim away any dead branches. If you notice dead growth around the canopy of the shrubs, carefully trim those away by hand.

Don’t Be Afraid to Use Power Trimmers
While it’s possible to shape your bushes and shrubs by hand with clippers, it will take hours to get the job done. Don’t be afraid to use power trimmers to speed up the task. Just remember to take it slow and only trim the excess growth you see popping out at all angles. If you need to shape them more aggressively, consider waiting until your landscaping expert can take care of it for you. Trimming too much can be just as devastating to the look of your landscaping as not trimming enough.

Don’t Tackle Too Much
If you’re worried about the amount of trimming that your shrubs need or think they may be struggling with disease, don’t try to deal with it on your own. Instead, make an appointment with your landscaping contractor and let them inspect your shrubs. They’ll be able to trim them properly and can help you figure out what types of maintenance your plants need to thrive year-round.
