How to Care for Concrete Elements in Your Denver Landscaping

October 2, 2020

Concrete is one of the most versatile materials that you can incorporate into your home’s Denver landscape design. It’s durable, can be shaped in whatever ways you want, and creates eye-catching walkways to help you navigate your yard. Though it’s durable, it still needs routine care and maintenance. As long as you stay on top of things, you won’t find those maintenance tasks difficult. Here’s what you need to do to keep your concrete looking great year-round.

Clean It Often

The most important maintenance task you need to take care of is cleaning your concrete. Try to do this at least once every two weeks to keep the buildup from getting too severe. Grab a stiff-bristled broom and sweep away any dust, dirt, and plant debris that collects on the surface and in the textured parts of each slab. You’ll want to do this even during the winter months to keep the dirt from getting embedded in the surface. In the spring, you can always use a pressure washer to blast away any remaining grime as needed. If you prefer to use a little more elbow grease, you can also scrub the surface by hand.

Seal It Regularly

All concrete can benefit from regular applications of concrete sealant. This is a chemical that helps protect the concrete from moisture and dirt over time. In most cases, you’ll want to apply a fresh layer of sealant every year. If you’re not comfortable doing it yourself, don’t panic. Just work with your landscaping team and let them handle the task for you.

Avoid Storing Heavy Items in the Same Spot

Unfortunately, concrete can’t support heavy loads indefinitely. If you tend to store large or overly heavy items in the same spot, it’s only a matter of time until you notice wear and cracks in the concrete. Whenever possible, try to move those heavy items to a spot away from concrete surfaces. If you can’t, move the items around so they’re never staying in the same spot for too long. This will keep the concrete from cracking and showing signs of damage early on.

Use Concrete-Safe Ice Melt

Believe it or not, ice melt can do serious damage to your concrete. When you use the wrong type, the deicing agents can soak into the surface of the concrete and cause it to degrade. This increases the risk of cracks, pits, and divots that ruin the look you’re going for in your landscape design. During the winter months, take the time to choose the right type of ice melt for your yard. Choose a plant-safe and concrete safe option and you’ll be in good shape.
