Denver Landscaping Maintenance You Can Take Care of In the Winter

October 14, 2020

When winter comes around, taking care of your yard and Denver landscape design is the last thing on your mind. All you want to do is stay warm and stay out of the elements as much as you can. Though you’re free to spend tons of time indoors, there are still a few things you can do to keep your yard looking great during the winter months. If you’re not sure where to start, don’t panic. Here are a few of the best maintenance tasks to take care of when the temperatures drop so your yard will look great no matter what the weather is like.

Spread Mulch

Mulch is one of the best ways to add color to an otherwise dormant landscape during the winter months. Spread a thick layer of the mulch of your choice over your garden beds and flower beds. If you have younger trees, spread a layer of it around the base of them, too. As the mulch breaks down, it will deposit nutrients into the soil that your plants can use in the spring to bounce back from the winter months more quickly. If you have old mulch in place, rake it up gently and replace it with new. This will give you a nicer looking space instantly.

Hang Holiday Lights
When the leaves start falling from your trees, it can make your yard look baren. Instead of leaving those trees naked during the winter, hang holiday lights from their branches. If you’re comfortable working on ladders, you can do it on your own. However, most homeowners prefer to let professionals install the lights for them. This reduces the impact that the lights will have on the trees themselves and ensures that they’ll be able to perform well come springtime.

Wrap Young Trees and Shrubs
Young trees need a little TLC when the winter weather gets severe. If you can, wrap the trunks of those trees with a durable burlap wrapping. You can then decorate that wrapping to suit whatever holidays you choose to celebrate. Once the wrapping is in place, you’ll want to leave it until early spring when the temperatures are starting to increase. This way, you won’t accidentally shock the tree with unexpected cold.

Keep Heavy Items Off the Grass
Your lawn is still sensitive when it’s not actively growing. The grass blades and roots get brittle when the ground freezes. This means it’s easy to damage your lawn by storing heavy items on it during the winter. Start paying attention to your lawn even when it’s covered in snow. If you notice anything heavy, remove those items and store them in your garage or on a paved patio.
