How to Clean up Your Denver Landscaping After Surprise Spring Blizzards

Heavy snow may make your yard and landscaping look magical. But when it happens during the beginning of the growing season, it can damage your Denver landscape design in a matter of minutes. The best thing you can do for your yard and your plants is to clean up the damage quickly. So, where should you start and what tasks can you handle on your own? Here’s what you need to do to get your yard back into perfect shape for the rest of the growing season.

Pick up Fallen Debris

The first thing you should do once the storm subsides is to check your yard for fallen plant debris, limbs, and cracked branches. Walk around your yard and check the trees and shrubs on your property. If you notice branches hanging or dangling from the trunks of your trees, be prepared to call your landscaping team and get them to help with safe removal of those branches. If there’s a buildup of debris around your yard but the pieces themselves are small, remove them and bag them up for your waste removal service. They’ll be able to haul away the plant matter safely.

Use Ice Melt Sparingly

Ice melt may get rid of slipping hazards on your walkways, but it’s not the best thing for your landscaping. It can change the pH in the soil and scorch your newly growing plants in a matter of hours. If you choose to use ice melt, look for one that’s safe for plants if possible. If you can’t find plant-safe ice melt, use salt sparingly and be ready to spray down the plants close to the walkways. This will dilute the salt buildup and keep your soil’s pH from changing dramatically.

Pile Snow Away From Garden Beds

When you’re shoveling and trying to clear the property quickly, it’s easy to toss the snow wherever you can. As long as it’s off of your walkways and driveway, you’re in good shape. But all that weight can be bad for lawns and garden beds trying to recover from the storm. As you shovel, make a plan. Find a place to throw the snow that won’t put your plants at risk. Spread the weight out over the expanse of your lawn whenever possible to prevent soil compaction and lessen the strain on your plants. If you notice snow drifts putting too much weight in one spot, grab your shovel and carefully spread them out across the rest of your property.
