Denver Landscaper Shares How to Get Rid of Weeds on Your Patio Pavers

A patio is one of the most versatile additions you can have in your yard. It’s the perfect outdoor entertainment spot, a place to hose down the dog after a springtime rainstorm, and it’s ideal for relaxing in the summer sun. But almost all patios have a common problem that homeowners struggle to deal with: unexpected weed growth. You take pride in your Denver landscaping and when your patio looks overgrown, it can make the rest of your yard look the same. Here are a few tips and tricks to help you get rid of those unwanted weeds once and for all.

Use Baking Soda

Spreading toxins and poisons will get rid of your weeds, but they can also damage the rest of your landscaping. Instead of grabbing a commercial weed killer, pull some baking soda out of the pantry. Dampen the soil around the weeds with the hose and then spread a thick layer of baking soda over the weeds. The baking soda soaks into the soil and the weeds’ roots, overloading them so they can’t continue to grow. You can even use the baking soda to prevent future growth once you get rid of the original weeds. Just spread a thin layer in the cracks between the pavers and reapply every month or after a heavy rainstorm.

Boil a Pot of Water

Believe it or not, boiling water is also an incredibly effective way to kill unwanted weeds. The high temperatures shock the weeds’ roots and kill their ability to grow. After a few days, you should be able to pull the weed up easily. Best of all, it can even help clean your pavers, making your patio look better throughout the year. Just take care not to let the boiling water seep into plants you want to keep. Those high temperatures can kill them just as easily as the weeds you want to get rid of.

Pressure Wash Your Pavers

Pressure washing is arguably one of the simplest and fastest ways to breathe new life into your pavers. All you have to do is rent a pressure washer unit from a local hardware store, plug it in, and start spraying the pavers. The water will have enough pressure to remove stuck on dirt, algae, and grime from the pavers themselves and will obliterate the weeds growing in the cracks. For best results, you’ll want to do this at least twice a year. The weeds may come back between washings, but they’ll do so more slowly.

Fill the Cracks

Weeds can’t grow in the cracks if they don’t have space. Consider filling in the cracks with polymeric sand to keep the weeds at bay. This sand is incredibly fine-grained and has added silica which helps keep weeds from taking root. Even better, it acts as a binder for the pavers, making them stronger and more resistant to those wintertime freeze and thaw patterns we see so often.

These simple tips will help you keep the weeds at bay for months to come. But if you feel overwhelmed or aren’t sure where to start with repairing your patio, drop us a line and let our team help.
